Thinking about Assignment 2

This last week I have been starting to think about the second assignment as I only have a few exercises left to go.

Initially I thought about doing this one based around my ice hockey work.  However recently I haven't had much rec ice hockey work which would be most suited, a couple of my regular teams have been using a different photographer - was nice of them to tell me I wasn't required anymore but that's another story!

Then last weekend the weather was beautiful and for the first time in a long time I didn't have any work or other plans and I thought how about I do the assingment around my local lake, Tongwell Lake in Milton Keynes.  So armed with the list of things we needed to illustrate I headed there and spent a couple of hours walking around seeing what opportunities arose.

Single point dominating the composition
F/7.1, 1/400s, ISO160, 120mm

There are a lot swans, geese, ducks etc. on this lake and my thoughts were to and see if I could get a frame with just one of them in as my single point.  This is my favourite out of all the ones I took.

Two Points
F/8, /640s, ISO400, 300mm

This was taken from around the other side of the lake to where I took my photograph of the single swan for my single point photograph.  I did origially taken once from the same place but of two canadian geese, however when I had walked further around I came across this couple.  I liked the idea of sticking with swans to contrast with the single point also that in the single point the swan is coming towards the camera and in the two points the swans are swimming away from the camera.

Several points in a deliberate shape
F/5.6, 1/320s, ISO160, 110mm

This wasn't a photograph I intentionally took while I was at the lake for the assignment.  I took quite a few with various ducks and geese but think this one is perfect for points in a deliberate shape.  There is a little more space to the right of the frame when the two nearest geese are heading and the two geese heading towards the camera make up the shape.

A combination of vertical and horizontal lines
F/22, 1/40s, ISO1610, 44mm

I took a few photographs as I walked around the lake that included horizontals and verticals. This one I like as it has horizontals from several parts, the landing platforms, the steps at the far side of the lake and the tree line.  There are also several sources of verticals, the posts on the landing platforms, the tree trunks and even the lampposts around the back of the lake.  I took a close up off these three landing platforms from the other direction which would have been really strong but I just couldn't get the right depth of field and it all in sharp enough focus.

Diagonals
F/22, 1/100s, ISO400, 35mm

This is one firm image I had in mind for diagonals when I decided to use the lake for this assignment.  I like the diagonal lines of the wood planks of the landing platform and the two rows of bollards on each side make lots of diagonals in the same direction.  Given the feedback from assignment 1 about trying to include little extra details to take my photographs to the next level i'm not sure if I should leave this as taken with the opposite shoreline in the top of the photograph or do the following crop and take it out?
